Extended interviews with Seattle mayoral candidates
MAPLE VALLEY, Wash. – Many of us will likely head to our region’s lakes and rivers to keep cool this holiday weekend. First responders tell Q13 News the water’s temperatures across our region are still cold enough to be dangerous for you and your family. But do you have to wear a life jacket? It turns out the laws are not so cut and dry and at least one first responder thinks they should be required whatever kind of vessel you use. And they reminded the public that the best way to stay safe on the water is with a life jacket, even if it’s not required. A new loaner life jacket program at Lake Wilderness Park aims to keep your kids safe on the water. Thanks to several public and private organizations, a rack of loaner life jackets are available for anybody who wants one – all for free. “If we could keep one person from drowning, we wanted to make sure we provided that,” said Tyerman. Washington State Parks also sponsor similar programs across the state. “There is no better thin..

WANTED IN SEATTLE — Seattle Police are asking for the public’s help to find Kevin Michael Lee II. King County Prosecutors have charged the 29 year old with Rape 2nd Degree-Domestic Violence and Assault in the 2nd Degree-Domestic Violence. A $150,000 warrant has been issued for his arrest. Detectives say he told the victim, “You’re really going to get it,” before attacking her. “She actually let him in. They had been friends but had broken off the relationship. During this time, it was very obvious to her that he had been drinking. All of a sudden he grabbed her. He shoved her around the apartment by choking her and then that led to the point where he actually took her in a bedroom where he forced sex upon her. It’s very vicious assault,” said Ret. Det. Myrle Carner with Crime Stoppers of Puget Sound. The victim told police Lee choked her at least 10 different times and at one point said, “I’m going to rip your airways out of your throat.” Detectives say after Lee passed out, the vi..

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) — A spokesman for U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says there’s now a “clear understanding” about what’s needed to reach an agreement reunifying ethnically divided Cyprus. Spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Saturday that the recognition of the “essential elements” of a possible accord emerged from a meeting Guterres had with the rival sides during high-level peace talks in Switzerland. Guterres met Friday with Greek Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades and breakaway Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci in an attempt to give the three-day-old talks a momentum boost. He also met with diplomats from Cyprus’ “guarantors” — Britain, Greece and Turkey. Disagreements over Cyprus’ future security arrangements remain a key stumbling block. Dujarric says Guterres remains “fully engaged” in the process. Officials say the negotiations are likely to continue all next week. Copyright © The Associated Press. All rights reserved. KILLER WANTED IN LONG BEACH — One of the best and busiest places to celebrate The 4th of July weekend in Washington state is at Long Beach in Pacific County. Thousands hit the sandy 28-mile stretch to party, celebrate our nation’s independence, and enjoy the fireworks. KINSHASA, Congo (AP) — Congo’s health minister has declared an end to the country’s Ebola outbreak. Health Minister Oly Ilunga Kalenga said in a statement Saturday that Congo has officially gone 42 days with no new recorded cases of the deadly virus. The health minister says the outbreak killed four of the eight people infected. Officials announced the outbreak in May, saying it began in Bas-Uele province in Congo’s remote northeast in the Likati zone, some 1,400 kilometers (870 miles) from the capital, Kinshasa. The World Health Organization called it the eighth outbreak of the hemorrhagic fever in Congo since 1976. None was connected to the massive outbreak in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone that left more than 11,300 dead. That outbreak was declared finished a year ago. Copyright © The Associated Press.
